Losing a pet can be like the end of the world. Of course you
want to do anything you can to get your beloved family member
back-and lost pet posters are an important part of the
search process. The chances are that someone in the area has seen
your pet but were unaware that it was stray.
You need to make sure that your posters are placed in the most
visable areas, road crossings or intersections are a good place to
have them. Study has shown that you only have a short time to get
the information you need across to the public, so you must make it
obvious that the poster is for a lost pet and a photo is clearly
visable.
Your missing pet poster will be much more effective if you
include a recent photo of your missing pet. Make sure the photo is
in focus and shows the front of the missing pet. Print the poster
in colour, especially if your pet has distinctive patterns or
colouring. If you are unable to add any photos, you must make the
description as clear as possible. Include colourings, eye colour,
size and unique features such as tail length, floppy ears
or has a limp.
When writing the
description it is sometimes wise to leave out a specific detail,
something only you would know, so that if you receive a call
you can quickly find out if it is actually your pet.
Include a phone number that you, or someone you trust, can be
reached on at any time. A mobile number or a phone where someone
can leave a message would be best.
Finally, be aware of fake callers. As sad as it is, there may be
people who would mis-use the information on a poster. It is
unadvisable to give any finders your address, suggest a public
place to meet and don't go alone. If a finder calls saying they
have your pet, you can always ask about the detail you left off the
poster, or imagine a mark that you know the pet does not have
and ask whether the pet has the mark. If they confirm the pet they
have has the mark, you know it is not your pet.
