Petlog puts Fizz back into owner's life

Issued December 2004

A Bearsden cat owner was left feeling bubbly after being reunited with her beloved pet Fizz recently, thanks to Petlog, the Kennel Club's Pet Identification Service. Fizz, a three-year old female tabby was found safe and sound eleven weeks after disappearing from outside a local vet surgery.

Yvonne McCafferty had registered Fizz with Petlog to help to get her back in case of an emergency, and was glad she had when Fizz escaped from her carrier and ran off in early September. Fortunately she was found recently when a vet scanned her for a microchip after a local family, who had taken her in and looked after her, took her in to a surgery. By quoting the unique reference number on the microchip in Fizz's neck, Petlog was able to reunite her with her delighted owner.

"We were delighted and surprised to get her back after so long," said Mrs McCafferty. "Without the kindness and thoughtfulness of the gentleman who found her and the Petlog registration service, we would never have seen her again."

"She has lost half her body weight but is recovering well and the tiny bald patch on her tummy, which was the reason for taking her to the vets in the first place, has cleared up all on its own! We're just so glad that the story has a happy ending and it's certainly proved what a good idea it was to get her microchipped" she added.

The incident is the latest example of the success of the Petlog scheme. Over 2,000,000 pets have been microchipped as part of the scheme, which is integral to helping a large number of lost and stolen pets to be reunited with their owners.

The latest development in pet retrieval technology was launched last year, with the introduction of a mobile texting service for Petlog Plus customers. This allows the owner to text a message informing Petlog of a missing pet and thereby triggering an e-mail to authorised agents, including vets, dog wardens and rescue kennels in an approximate 30 mile radius.

It isn't just owners that can make use of the new service. The authorised agents can also scan stray animals that they find and then text the microchip text number to Petlog which then sends the owner's details back to the agent who can return the pet to its rightful owner quickly and easily.
